Papaya is a perennial herbaceous plant in the Caricaceae family that is farmed for its edible fruit. The papaya plant is a tree-like plant with hollow stems and petioles that are normally unbranched. The palmately lobed leaves are spirally organised and grouped at the trunk’s developing tip. The papaya is a huge fleshy berry with smooth green skin that becomes yellow or orange as it ripens. The fruit’s flesh is rich and succulent, and the colour ranges from yellow to red to orange. Many black wrinkled seeds are present in the fruit. Papaya trees can grow to be 2–10 metres tall (6.6–33 feet) and live for up to 25 years.
