This annual herb is grown primarily for its fragrant lemon scent, and is used in cooking. Because of its limonene content, lemon basil can be used to treat heartburn.<\/p>\n<p><strong>KNOWN HAZARD:<\/strong> None known<\/p>\n<p><strong>PLANT PARTS USED: <\/strong>Leaves, flowers and seeds<\/p>\n<p><strong>EDIBLE USES: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Leaves<\/strong> &#8211; Are eaten raw or used in soups, stews, curries as food flavoring and in stir-fried dishes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Flowers<\/strong> &#8211; Edible, can be eaten with the leaves.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Seeds<\/strong> &#8211; Are used in sweet desserts or drinks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>MEDICINAL USES: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>To relieve migraine, reduce insomnia and anxiety<\/strong> &#8211; The essential oil is used as aromatherapy.<\/li>\n<li><strong>To treat fever, flu and flatulence<\/strong> &#8211; Drink decoction of the leaves.<\/li>\n<li><strong>To relieve insect stings and bites<\/strong> &#8211; Apply fresh basil leaves juice on the affected area and repeat after a few hours.<\/li>\n<li><strong>To treat bacterial infection and intestinal parasites &#8211; <\/strong>Mix grounded leaves with water and drink it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>OTHER USES: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>As an aromatic ingredient in potpourris, extracted as essential oil and used in perfumery and cosmetic industries.<\/li>\n<li>As a natural insect repellent.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>PLANT CARE:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It prefers a well-drained soil with plenty of sun, 6-8 hours of sunlight daily.<\/li>\n<li>Regularly harvest or shear the plants to keep new foliage coming in<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Propagated by seeds or stem cuttings. For stem cuttings, take a 4 inches basil cutting right below a leaf node. Remove the leaves off the basil cutting about 2 inches from the end. Put in a glass of water on the windowsill where it can get good sunlight. Change the water every few days until you see root growth.
