The leaves are often confused with betel pepper, but they lack the intense taste and are much smaller in size. Wild betel has long been used traditionally to treat diabetes and hypertension.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>KNOWN HAZARD:<\/strong> None known<\/p>\n<p><strong>PLANT PARTS USED:<\/strong> Leaves<\/p>\n<p><strong>EDIBLE USES:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Young leaves<\/strong> &#8211; The mildly peppery leaves are popular in Southeast Asian cooking, mostly used raw, but sometimes cooked.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>MEDICINAL USES:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Leaves boiled in water and taken to treat diabetes, coughs, flu and malarial fever.<\/li>\n<li>Leaves pounded and used as poultice for headaches.<\/li>\n<li>Leaf decoction applied as body rub for body aches.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>OTHER USES:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Wild betel leaves extract is used in cosmetic formulation and also in pharmaceutical industries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>PLANT CARE:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Prefers rich open soils in a warm position with filtered light and a pole or trellis to climb on.<\/li>\n<li>Aside from partial shade or filtered light and moist soil, the plant is low maintenance.<\/li>\n<li>Feed it with liquid fertilizer once a fortnight during the growing phase and harvest regularly to promote new growth.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Wild betel can be propagated easily by stem cuttings.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><em>(Piper sarmentosum)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A creeping perennial herb with stems up to 10m<br \/>\nlong.
