The fruit has a unique sour taste and is medicinally used as a remedy for coughs, asthma and fever.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>KNOWN HAZARD:<\/strong> None known<\/p>\n<p><strong>PLANT PARTS USED:<\/strong> Fruits, leaves and roots<\/p>\n<p><strong>EDIBLE USES:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Fruits<\/strong> &#8211; Primarily used in fish soups, curries and sauces. Peeling is unnecessary as the skin comes off easily when steamed or boiled. The fruits are sometimes used as a substitute for tamarind, because they offer a similar sour flavor. The fruits can be eaten raw in salads, when they are immature and still green.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>MEDICINAL USES:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The leaves are used as poultices for swellings.<\/li>\n<li>A decoction of the roots is taken to give relief for indigestion.<\/li>\n<li>The roots are used externally in a bath for fever at night, and in a poultice, for itches, cuts, wounds and bruises.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>OTHER USES:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>None known<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>PLANT CARE:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Succeeds in full sun and in light shade.<\/li>\n<li>Can be grown in a wide range of well-drained, fertile soils.<\/li>\n<li>Pruning is necessary to reduce pest and disease incidence.<\/li>\n<li>Fruit thinning is also suggested when necessary.<\/li>\n<li>The plant and leaves are all laden with sharp thorns, thus extra precaution is needed when harvesting the fruits.<\/li>\n<li>The plant can be propagated by seeds or half-ripe wood cuttings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(<em>Solanum lasiocarpum<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p>S. lasiocarpum?is found wild in parts of temperate and tropical Asia: the?Andaman Islands,?Sri Lanka,?Indochina, south?China,?Taiwan, much of?Malesia,?Papuasia?and?Queensland, Australia.?In other countries it is primarily known as a domesticated plant.
