It contains a sticky juice that people use to thicken sauces, and widely used in cuisines such as Caribbean and Indian. The plant is cultivated as an essential crop in many countries due to its high nutritional value.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>KNOWN HAZARD:<\/strong> The hairs on the seed pods can be an irritant to some people.<\/p>\n<p><strong>PLANT PARTS USED:<\/strong> Seeds, fruits, flowers, leaves and roots<\/p>\n<p><strong>EDIBLE USES:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Immature fruits<\/strong> &#8211; Cooked on their own or added to soups, stews or sauces.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Seeds<\/strong> &#8211; Cooked or ground into a meal and used in making bread.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Leaves and flowers<\/strong> &#8211; Can be eaten or cooked as greens.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Roots <\/strong>&#8211; It is edible but very fibrous.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>MEDICINAL USES:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>To treat sore throat associated with coughing<\/strong> &#8211; Drink okra juice.<\/li>\n<li><strong>To treat skin itchiness<\/strong> &#8211; Apply okra juice to the affected area.<\/li>\n<li><strong>To cure diarrhea<\/strong> &#8211; Drink okra juice.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>OTHER USES:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Used in making paper and textiles.<\/li>\n<li>Used to treat dandruff.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>PLANT CARE:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Okra can grow in many soil types, so mulch and fertilize as needed.<\/li>\n<li>Okra performs best in well-drained soil rich in organic matter and thrives in the full sun at least 5-6 hours daily.<\/li>\n<li>Regular watering is needed and is critical during flowering and pod development.<\/li>\n<li>Harvest okra pods when they are 2-4 inches long.<\/li>\n<li>Propagated by seeds.
