The plant\u2019s long narrow pods are eaten as a vegetable, similar in use to string beans.<\/p>\n<p><strong>KNOWN HAZARD:<\/strong> Consumption of large quantities of leaves can cause diarrhea.<\/p>\n<p><strong>PLANT PARTS USED: <\/strong>Leaves, flowers, seeds, pods and bark<\/p>\n<p><strong>EDIBLE USES: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Young leaves, flowers, young pods<\/strong> &#8211; used in curries, soups, lightly fried, steamed or boiled.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Seeds <\/strong>&#8211; The protein rich seeds are fermented into tempeh.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>MEDICINAL USES: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>To treat rheumatism<\/strong> &#8211; A paste of the root is applied externally.<\/li>\n<li><strong>To treat fever<\/strong> &#8211; A bark decoction is taken orally.<\/li>\n<li><strong>To relieve sinus congestion<\/strong> &#8211; Decoction of flowers is taken.<\/li>\n<li>Lowers blood pressure.<\/li>\n<li>Prevents Alzheimer\u2019s disease.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>OTHER USES: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The bark yields a tanning agent and is a major source of pulp for use in making paper.<\/li>\n<li>Dried and powdered bark is used as a cosmetic in Java.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>PLANT CARE:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It thrives under full exposure to sunlight and grows well in wide range of soils.<\/li>\n<li>Although the plant likes dry soil, it benefits from occasional water during hot, dry weather.<\/li>\n<li>Can be propagated by seeds or cuttings of half-ripe woods. For propagation using seeds, the seeds shall be soaked for 24 hours and planted out in a polybag or pot filled with potting mix.
