The high-fiber, low-calorie eggplant is rich in nutrients and comes with many potential health benefits. In particular, the fruit is suitable as part of a diet to help regulate high blood pressure.<\/p>\n<p><strong>KNOWN HAZARD: <\/strong>All green parts of the plant are poisonous.<\/p>\n<p><strong>PLANT PARTS USED: <\/strong>Fruits, roots and seeds<\/p>\n<p><strong>EDIBLE USES: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Fruits<\/strong> &#8211; Can be eaten raw, but typically bitter and tastes best when cooked. It can be baked, stewed, added to soups or curries.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Seeds <\/strong>&#8211; Are edible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>MEDICINAL USES: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A decoction of the root is anti-asthmatic, astringent and general stimulant. It is made into a powder and applied both internally and externally as a remedy for bleeding.<\/li>\n<li>The juice of the root is used in the treatment of otitis and toothache.<\/li>\n<li>The fruits are used as an antidote to mushroom poisoning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>OTHER USES: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Extracts of both the fruits and the roots are used as ingredients in commercial cosmetic preparations as skin conditioners.<\/li>\n<li>The dried and powdered fruit is used as an ingredient in commercial cosmetic preparations for oral care.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>PLANT CARE: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Eggplant plant thrives in full-sun spots and requires staking, as they can grow tall and top-heavy.<\/li>\n<li>Water regularly and feed with a high potassium liquid fertilizer every 2 weeks once the first fruit starts to form.<\/li>\n<li>When plants are 30cm high, pinch out the tip of the main stem, to encourage side shoots.
