This annual or short-lived perennial plant has a strong, fresh, clove-scented leaves which is popular in Italian dishes. The leaves are mosquito repellent and also medicinal.<\/p>\n<p><strong>KNOWN HAZARD:<\/strong> Basil oil should be avoided on sensitive skin and during pregnancy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>PLANT PARTS USED: <\/strong>Flowers, leaves, young shoots and seeds<\/p>\n<p><strong>EDIBLE USES: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Young shoots<\/strong> &#8211; Are eaten raw as salad.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Leaves and flowers <\/strong>&#8211; Raw or cooked, as a flavoring and a refreshing tea is made from the leaves.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Seeds<\/strong> &#8211; The mucilaginous seeds are used as ingredient in desserts and drinks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>MEDICINAL USES: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>As general health tonic for women after childbirth &#8211; <\/strong>Drink decoction of the leaves.<\/li>\n<li><strong>As remedy for fever and flatulence &#8211; <\/strong>Drink decoction of the leaves.<\/li>\n<li><strong>To relieve insect stings and bites &#8211; <\/strong>Apply fresh basil leaves juice on the affected area and repeat after a few hours.<\/li>\n<li><strong>To treat bacterial infection and intestinal parasites &#8211; <\/strong>Mix grounded leaves with water and drink it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>OTHER USES: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>An essential oil extracted from the leaves is used in food flavoring, aromatherapy and in perfumery.<\/li>\n<li>The growing or dried plant are used as insect repellent.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>PLANT CARE:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It prefers a well-drained soil with plenty of sun.<\/li>\n<li>Harvest the leaves for use and to encourage a bushy plant habit.<\/li>\n<li>Propagated by seeds or stem cuttings. For stem cuttings, take a 4 inches basil cutting right below a leaf node. Remove the leaves off the basil cutting about 2 inches from the end. Put in a glass of water on the windowsill where it can get good sunlight. Change the water every few days until you see root growth.
