Large, black fruit with sweet, flavorful flesh. This slow growing deciduous shrub is sometimes cultivated in gardens for its delicious edible fruit which is known to help strengthen eyesight.<\/p>\n<p><strong>KNOWN HAZARD:<\/strong> Some people might experience allergic reactions after consumption of mulberry.<\/p>\n<p><strong>PLANT PARTS USED: <\/strong>Fruits, leaves and bark<\/p>\n<p><strong>EDIBLE USES: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Fruits and leaves<\/strong> &#8211; Fruits are eaten raw, cooked or used in preserves. Mulberries and its leaves are used for making teas and other beverages.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>MEDICINAL USES: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Drink mulberry leaf tea to lower cholesterol, lower blood sugar levels and reduce inflammation.<\/li>\n<li>Black mulberry is taken internally to aid in digestion, promote circulation, prevent cancer, improve vision, boost immunity and strengthen bones.<\/li>\n<li>Traditionally, the tincture made from bark is used to provide relief from toothache.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>OTHER USES: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Black mulberry extract can be applied to skin for a healthier brighter looking skin.<\/li>\n<li>Black mulberry is also used in pharmaceutical, perfumery and cosmetic products.<\/li>\n<li>A red-violet to dark purple dye is obtained from the fruit and a yellow-green dye is obtained from the leaves.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>PLANT CARE:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Easily grown in humus-rich soil, well-drained, fertile and moist soils.<\/li>\n<li>The plant is fairly drought tolerant but will benefit from some irrigation during the dry season.<\/li>\n<li>The plant is usually fairly low maintenance once established, provided they are in a sunny spot and grown in a warm area. The plant tends to bleed when cut, so avoid heavy pruning.<\/li>\n<li>Propagated by cuttings. Select a healthy mature stem and cut off the top part, bottom tip and trim all the larger mature leaves.\u00a0 Optionally, dip the bottom tip in a rooting hormone.\u00a0 Stick the cutting into a soil-filled pot and water generously.\u00a0 Keep the pot away from direct sunlight.
